Introduction

In this day and age where time is at a premium in our busy lives we don’t always have the luxury of exercising for long periods. Firstly finding the motivation to train for hours on end is tough and secondly the human brain gets bored easily! Well there is a way to train with shorter periods and get the same results if not better!! This method is whats called HIIT training. So what exactly is HIIT? It stands for high intensity interval training basically, where you have short bursts of exercise followed by shorts bursts of recovery. This type of training burns more fat in a short period of time essentially.

So what are the Benefits of HIIT?

1. Increases Your Metabolism

Combing high intensity with interval training results in speeding up your metabolic rate and can boost metabolism for up to 48 hours after a complete HIIT routine. This means you’ll still be burning fat even after you’ve left the gym.

2. Quick and Convenient

Long gone are the days of not having enough time for exercise. HIIT workouts can be done anywhere: at home, in a hotel room, in a park, at the beach, etc. And most are 30 minutes or less! Who can’t spare that?

3. No Equipment Necessary

No dumbbells? Not to worry! HIIT workouts generally use only your body weight, since the focus is on getting your heart rate up and keeping it there. These workouts result in muscle building and muscle retention and increase fat loss and increased calorie burn.

How to structure your HIIT session

There are a number of ways to do this. The easiest way however is just to use body weight exercises with a 20-30 second work period then a 20-20 secs active recovery. So for example squat jumps X 20-30 secs followed by an active recovery of jogging on the spot. Depending on your fitness levels do an active or stationary recovery

Another option is to line up 4 exercises in a row like squat thrusts, burpies, press ups, sit ups. Perform 20-30 secs of each then recovery for 1-2 mins and repeat this 3-4 times.

What you will find eventually by training in this way is your recovery times become shorter as you get fitter!
